As of 2008 a buddy system will be launched for Heriot Watt University Applied Psychology students. The system will be announced in the early weeks of Semester 1 and will be a benefit to students from all years. The buddy relationship is a helping process that takes place between a 1st and 3rd year or 2nd and 4th year. The buddy’s role is to help their peer discuss particular issues by drawing on their own experiences at university. With two years of student life under their belts 3rd year students are ideally placed to help first years make the most of the transition from school or other to university. Similarly by second year students have settled into university life and are considering more academic aspects such as volunteer experience with which the 4th year students will be better placed to advise or to redirect to the student's mentor where appropriate. The buddy system can help a person get the most out of their university experience and get to know someone further up in the course who has a bit more experience of being a student! For senior students the buddy system would allow them to add valuable experience to their CV. It is hoped that the buddy system will result in a more cohesive group within the psychology department where younger students have no worries about approaching students in the later years and where senior students are more open and have the chance to develop their interpersonal skills.
